What gets serviced, and what gets checked

Each equipment class fails in its own way. These are the checks that actually catch problems before they become a breakdown, by item.

Patient hoists · floor & mobile
Load path, actuator, slings

Mast, boom and spreader bar inspected for deformation and play. Actuator travel and noise under load, emergency lowering tested, castors and brakes checked for the drag that makes a hoist hard to steer.

Slings are inspected separately — stitching, webbing wear, loop condition and label legibility. A sling whose label cannot be read cannot be verified for load rating, so it is withdrawn rather than passed.

Electric adjustable beds
Actuators, hand control, cable runs

Head, foot and hi-lo actuators run through full travel to find the stall or judder that precedes failure. Hand control and cable tested for intermittent contacts — the fault most often dismissed as "it does it sometimes".

Cable routing checked for pinch points under the frame, plus side rail security and castor brakes. Mains lead and plug are tested and tagged at the same time.

Power wheelchairs & scooters
Batteries, controller, drive train

Battery health measured rather than guessed, because batteries cause more downtime than every mechanical fault combined. Charger output verified — a failing charger quietly destroys a good battery pack.

Joystick and controller response, motor brush wear, brake engagement, tyre and castor condition, and the cracked castor housings that cause the intermittent pulling people learn to live with.

Riser recliners
Lift mechanism and transformer

Scissor mechanism and lift motor checked under actual user weight, not empty. Frame welds and pivot points inspected for the fatigue cracks that appear after a few thousand cycles.

Transformer, hand control and battery backup tested — the backup is the part nobody discovers has failed until there is a power outage and the chair is stuck reclined.

Why a biomedical background matters here

Most AT repair work is done either by electricians who understand the mains side but not the clinical purpose of the device, or by equipment handlers who understand the device but cannot legally touch its electrical components. Ampcare sits deliberately in between.

A Restricted Electrical Work Licence covering equipment up to 250VAC allows work on mains cords, plug tops, transformers and internal power supplies. A biomedical science degree means the device is understood as something a person's mobility and dignity depend on — so a hoist that works but drifts, or a chair that runs but pulls, gets treated as a fault rather than a quirk.

The practical result is fewer referrals. A fault that another provider would split across two trades is usually diagnosed and repaired in one visit.

+Do you inspect slings and load-test hoists?

Hoist servicing covers the mast, boom, actuator, castors, emergency lowering and battery, with a functional load check under working conditions. Slings are inspected for stitching, webbing, label legibility and loop wear, and any sling that cannot be confirmed serviceable is withdrawn rather than passed.

+What does a repair cost?

An $85 call-out plus $125 per hour of labour, with parts quoted separately before they are fitted. Most single-item services are completed inside the first hour, and combining a service with a test and tag visit means one call-out instead of two.

+What is the most common cause of breakdown?

Batteries, by a wide margin. Powered equipment is usually retired or emergency-repaired for battery reasons long before anything mechanical fails, and battery health is checked at every service so replacement is planned rather than urgent.

Work is carried out under a Restricted Electrical Work Licence covering equipment up to 250VAC, which covers mains-side components on AT equipment.
